In regards to pointing, how important is a correct point? My son points to his wants and interests but sometimes it more of an open hand point instead of just an index finger. (He is 14 months old)

If your son is pointing/gesturing in any manner to express his needs or interests, that is great! He is communicating. For 14 months of age, this is excellent in terms of language development.

In regards to the manner of pointing, this is a fine motor skill more than a language skill. I am not an expert by any means on physical development, but my educated guess is that it is normal. My 15 month old son also does the "open hand, palm up" point quite often :).
