Reading is one of the BEST ways to develop strong speech, language, social, and cognitive skills. To know how to best do that takes years of school and years of practice.
Therefore, this Mitten Story Companion is designed to help guide you on how to read with your students and children and support speech and language growth at the same time! Enjoy!
As always, I like to review the theory behind the materials created at Speech Therapy Talk Services, LLC.
The goal of this activity is to keep speech and language therapy activities functional, natural, and meaningful. Reading is one task that checks all the boxes. The additional bonus is that most children already love to read so it never feels like work.

This companion targets:
For example, the sentence strips or WH cue cards are used to help children answer WH questions while reading the story (i.e., a child who doesn’t have the expressive language abilities to answer a question can point to a picture to answer the question and participate in a group).
The story retell guide can help a child sequence events, practice narrative structure, target correct articulation (if applicable), reinforce new vocabulary, and more!
