Receptive Language

Ahhh....receptive language. I believe receptive language skills can be the hardest to teach mainly because it is hard to tease out WHY a child is having trouble with receptive language (listening skills).

When discussing receptive language, there are 4 main areas to consider:

1. Ability to following directions2. Understanding questions3. Understanding grammar4. Vocabulary

Personally, I don’t love separating expressive language skills with receptive language skills since they are so intertwined. Also, there could be multiple reasons why a child may have difficultly understanding language.

HOWEVER, most speech pathologists, teachers, and standardized tests talk about receptive language skills as a separate entity. Click below to learn more!
