How To Say V & Cues

In order to teach V to your child effectively, you must know how to say V yourself. I will teach you tactile, verbal, and visual cues as well.

Once you review this section, move on to Teach V to start the teaching and practicing phase.

How To Say V and Cues

Teach V & Syllable Level Practice

Teach V to your child and then practice the newly learned skill at the syllable level. If your child is already attending speech therapy for V, skip this section and move on to the word level.

The teaching phase begins at the syllable level. This level is the easiest since all other speech demands are taken away. Your child is not repeating words that he or she has already learned incorrectly. Your child can start from a clean slate.

Word Level

At this level, it is important to practice saying the sound in the beginning (initial), middle (medial), and end (final) position. Your child's mouth has to coordinate and move muscles differently depending on where the sound falls within a word. Once your child can say V in words, move on to sentences.

This stage may last longer than syllables and that is normal. However, don’t get stuck here if your child misses a word here or there. 100% accuracy is rare and not necessary!

Sentence Level

This is the most exciting phase since this is where a new speech habit is solidified.

In order to encourage carryover of progress, you will throw away all speech cards and practice saying V in sentences during structured games.
