How to Say B & Cues

In order to teach B to your child, you must first know how to say B correctly yourself. I will teach you effective tactile, verbal, and visual cues that will help to elicit correct B productions.

Teach B & Syllable Practices

If you are just starting out, please begin with this section. If your child is already in speech therapy and is currently targeting B, start with B at the word level. 

You will teach B to your child at the syllable level is the easiest since all other speech demands are taken away. Also, at this level, your child is not repeating words that he or she has already learned incorrectly. It is hard to break a bad habit and start a new habit at the same time!

Teach B & Syllable Practices



Word Level

Congratulations! Your child say B at the syllable level. Now, you are ready to work on saying B correctly in words. 

At this level, it is important to practice saying the sound in the beginning (initial), middle (medial), and end (final) position. Our mouth has to coordinate and move muscles differently depending on where the sound falls within a word. Once your child can say B in words, move on to sentences.  

This stage may last longer than syllables and that is normal. However, don’t get stuck here if your child misses a word here or there. 100% accuracy is rare and not necessary!

Sentence Level

If your child can repeat or name B pictures correctly, you are ready to move on to the sentence level. This is the most exciting phase since this is where a new speech habit happen. Here, your child will learn how to /b/ correctly automatically

In order to encourage carryover of progress, you will be throwing away all speech cards. Instead, you will practice saying B in sentences in natural games!
